Always Yearning, Always Fraying, Yet Staying by Kelly K. Lavender is an unusually satisfying story, infused with realism and exploring some of the human traits we live with and are hardly aware of. Paloma joined the Tri-State Wink Think and Defend competition and became a runner-up, and the regret of not winning only amplified the disappointment she feels about herself and her failing relationship with Jim. Her husband is a very successful salesman and the dream of every woman, but at home, he is aloof and unemotional. Paloma and Liam, their son, expect more from him, but he has a kind of detachment that makes the situation almost hopeless. As time goes by, the bond they once shared ebbs…
Kelly K. Lavender creates relatable characters that feel like people I see every day, with their struggles. The family dynamics are finely drawn, and Jim appears to be the typical breadwinner husband who behaves as though providing for the family is everything a man can do. Paloma is the hardworking woman who wants more from her marriage: a deeper connection, a thoughtful husband, and a presence that brings life to the family. The emotional conflict is cleverly written, and the author allows the friction between the characters and Paloma’s internal struggles to shape the direction of the story. I was invested in the characters. I was delighted by the exquisite prose, and the author’s deft exploration of family dysfunction made the story more than entertaining: it became food for thought. Always Yearning, Always Fraying, Yet Staying cleverly examines the question: How much can a woman take before she finally breaks?
