Writing books that celebrate, inspire and help women – a motivator. Writing books that entertain both men and women – a wonderful added bonus. So grateful that Beautiful Evil Winter and Plenty have showcased my efforts with award-winning results. I’ve advertised both with the phrase: Engineered for generations of women who rescue themselves and the proud grateful unburdened parents and partners who love them.
It’s extra gratifying when my novels resonate with readers on a couple of levels. As Jodi Picoult said, “Fiction is the back door to truth.”
Robin Hansen’s Beautiful Evil Winter review remains one of my favorites:”The characters are of opposing values, fiery Sophia, hesitant Ethan, cruel mafia ponytail and his misfits, scheming Victoria and cruel possessive Natasha. It took the readers breath away due to the truth of the story, and humans being treated as fodder for violence and money. We are so used to freedom that the reader kept behind Sophia, pushing her to get up and fight for that freedom and Zack. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book, and gladly give it five stars and recommend it for reading by everyone. Opens the eyes.” Top 500 Amazon Reviewer R. Hansen
Overjoyed! Boom! Can a Suspense Thriller be Multi-Award-Winning and Meaningful? Yes.
When critics complains about the violence in this novel, I think back to the time spent in Russia. Every day, I watch headline evening news. A couple of stories about Russia standout: Putin Critic – Alexei Navalny Poisoned and imprisoned, Russian Aggression against the Ukraine, and The Kursk Submarine Disaster – 118 personnel died. I remember seeing a video of a hysterical Russian mother wailing during the funeral service. A man approached her, grabbed her by the arm and stabbed her with a needle. Within a single second, she collapsed. Her assailant hauled her away without interference. By the way, Russia initially refused international rescue help with the crippled submarine. When Russia finally re-considered, all sailors had died.
Furthermore, my globe-trotting father has said, “Life is cheap outside the U.S.” I agree. It’s my job to put the reader on-site in the cruel, criminal, dangerous world the characters inhabit. Mafia drama colors some the most unforgettable stories namely –The Godfather and Goodfellas. If unfamiliar with organized crime stories: maybe. this link will be helpful: https://www.historyhit.com/the-most-infamous-mob-bosses-in-history/.
And yes, Mafia storm bars in Russia. And for women, Russia ranks as the third most dangerous country for intentional female homicide and non-partner sexual violence in the world, according to Forbes “20 Most Dangerous Places for Women Travelers.” The violence – not to be edited out. I think of Fight Club without violence – hollow and ridiculous. Violence and organized crime – a given in Russia like snowfall. Beautiful Evil Winter isn’t a syrupy sweet Disney story about international adoption hence the DLSV tag. A tag also tied to one of my favorite tv series: The Americans.
