My parents have always emphasized the importance of doing homework. As an adult, this advice resonates more powerfully than ever. Doing homework, aka Due Diligence, has become more critical especially during these stormy times. Due Diligence goes beyond dated yelp reviews that can be influenced by offers of discounts for each posted review. It means asking family and friends for referrals too.

An anecdote comes to mind that illustrate this point very clearly:

Drats! We have critters crawling and chewing inside a house wall. I call a high-profile well-established pest control company. After inspection, the representative informs us that we have rats. Ugh! To fix the problem, attic insulation must be removed. When a conversation begins with, “If you have a job, we can offer financing…” it’s not a good sign. The quotes ranged from a low of $4800 for basic service to a high of $9,500 for platinum service. Hmmm… Time to do my homework. I called a friend whose house was infested with rats, inside her home She referred me to her pest control service. This particular company has eliminated her serious problem at a reasonable price. Their quote to eliminate the problem: $700 including follow-up visits. Enormous savings!

Across the board, in various unrelated industries —whether choosing an ethical dentist, splurging on a fine wool rug, building an equipment storage space or fence, choosing a bank or picking a mortgage lender – taking the time to perform due diligence can save thousands and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars. Seriously scrutinizing all purchases as if a real estate commitment is involved, pays for itself in the long-term and short-term.

As someone said, “If you take care of your money, it will take care of you.”
